Colegialas - Understanding Digital Portrayals

Cassandra Paredes (@cass_paredes) | Twitter

When we talk about things we see online, it's pretty important to think about the words we use and what they might mean to different people. Sometimes, a phrase can seem harmless on the surface, but when you dig a little deeper, you find it's connected to something a bit more complicated, you know? It's almost like words have these hidden layers, and it's good to be aware of what's truly there, actually.

Take the term "colegialas," for instance. In its most basic sense, it simply refers to young women who are students, which is, of course, a very ordinary part of life. Yet, as a matter of fact, in certain corners of the internet, this word gets used in ways that are, well, frankly, quite different and, in some respects, pretty concerning.

Our job as content creators and communicators is to make sure what we put out into the world is not just engaging but also responsible and safe for everyone. So, when we encounter material that uses terms like "colegialas" in a problematic way, it makes us pause and think about the bigger picture, and what kind of messages we're putting out
